Electoral Violence in Akwa Ibom State

The Federal Government approved the constitution of a twenty two man panel of enquiry to investigate instances of electoral violence and civil disturbances that occurred in some states of the federation in Akwa Ibom State.

The panel which will be chaired by Sheikh Ahmed Lemu, renowned Islamic scholar and former Grand Khadi of Niger state also has in its composition, Comrade Peter Esele of the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria as well as serving members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) who suffered the major casualty in the general elections.
A statement signed by the Permanent Secretary in the office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Femi Olayisade and made available to thisdays in Abuja, said the panel will work within a term of reference that include; an immediate investigation of remote causes of the pre-election violence in Akwa Ibom state as well as the wave of violence that followed the Presidential election in some northern states.
Other terms are; an investigation into the number of death recorded and injuries sustained, identification of the spread of the violence and its effect on means of livelihood, private and public properties and sources of weapons employed in the unrest.
The panel is also expected to proffer means of tracking and halting the tide of illegal inflow of arms which were used to execute such violence in the states, they will also advise the government on matters that are incidental to the unrest.
