Fielding questions in his office at the Glass House, Abuja, the General Secretary of the federation, Barr. Musa Amudu, noted that if it were otherwise, the world football governing body would have written to the federations of both countries, stressing that if there was any investigation, it concerns only the referee.
Asked to update Nigerians on the alleged FIFA probe, the federation's chief scribe thundered: “Let me clarify that impression. It is the duty of the media to educate the public on this issue. As we speak today, FIFA has not written to the federation to request our clarification on any aspect of the game or to request our side of the story.”
He further put the record straight, stressing: “What the FIFA is investigating has to do sorely with the centre referee of the game. Apparently, there was an allegation that after the fourth goals in the first, there was heavy betting in the Far East that there will be a fifth goal and when it finally came under questionable circumstances in the injury time, it became subject of the investigation.”
“There was no basis whatsoever to suggest that Nigeria, Argentina or their players were involved in any wrongdoing. If there were such allegations or the need for the federation to clarify the game, FIFA would have written to us two months after the game.
