The Thousands of residents of Lagos are still reeling from the effect of weekend’s heavy rain downpour in Lagos Statge, which has rendered many homeless and left property destroyed. Some residents were forced to stay back at home on Monday to scoop water from their houses and to estimate the damages
to their property as a lot of companies permitted some of their staff to work from home.Areas most affected by the flood include: parts of Lagos Island such as Victoria Island, Lekki, Ajah, Ikoyi, while those on the mainland include: Surulere, Ijegun, Satellite town, Mafoluku, Ogba and Mile 2.As NEXT moved round the city on Monday, most residents were seen trying to salvage what was left of their belongings while others were relocating their household goods to less flooded areas of the state.A resident at Ijegun, who simply identified herself as Mrs Onakwe, said her family spent the whole day scooping water from their room to no avail. “Immediately the rain started, we thought it will not be serious so we went to church. It was in church that we noticed that the rain was heavy and was even entering the church premises, but we stayed till the end of the church service,” she said. “When we went back home, our house was already flooded and we started scooping water. All our furniture, including our beddings, were soaked. We did not sleep that night as we kept scooping and scooping water but to no avail.” The flood did not spare residents of Surulere, as some of them were forced to abandon their works to attend to the flood in their homes. A construction worker at Surulere, Kolawole, said “I am at home scooping water from my house. I have told them not to expect me in the office for two days as the flood in my room is terrible.Everything in my room was affected and some of my properties are destroyed. In short, all through the night, it was a nightmare for all of us in my house, as we did not sleep.
